What limits the spread of PACS beyond the Radiology department in today’s hospitals? Cost and available network capacity. CDN’s CentraLite solves both issues. Even with WEB-based systems, the demand on the WEB server and database requires an expensive super-server and high-bandwidth/low-usage hospital networks.

The CentraLite system is a low-cost alternative that significantly reduces the demand on the central server and performs efficiently on existing low bandwidth networks. Hence, the hundreds of online PACS clients in your hospital have access to their studies from a low-cost server on the existing network.

What is Centra Lite?
It’s a controlled image distribution system where only the relevant study images are, on request, cached to the client’s local drive along with dictations & typed reports.

The CentraLite application is installed on all applicable Hospital PCs (wards, theatres, specialists, etc) automatically in a single operation from the PACS central server. The IT people love it!!

The users in the Radiology department capture, view and archive Dicom images with the CentraRad PACS systems. The Radiologist tags images during the reporting phase for CentraLite caching.

When a client requests a study, only these tagged images, reports and dictation will be copied to the clients’ local drive. The speed during image display and manipulation will be ideal for the client users. So, the study is retrieved once only – from then on it is available directly from that local drive. Network traffic is dramatically reduced, as are demands on the PACS server. To prevent the local disk overflowing aged studies are deleted by the CentraRad Disk Management System.

When a specialist requires the complete study in the original full Dicom resolution, any CentraRad Radiology user can initiate the caching.

Benefits
Studies with hundreds of images from Multi-Slice CT & MR, or multiple Cine Loop Cardiology studies can be made available to clinical users without overloading the hospital network.

The maximum file size per cached study can be set to an agreed amount by the IT Department to preserve network capacity, giving a quantifiable network traffic specification.

CentraLite is very practical for Teleradiology with the images resident on the WAN connected client before the Radiologist begins reporting.
